Blood is a living tissue composed of solid and liquid components. The liquid part consists of plasma, which is composed of water, salts, and proteins. Plasma makes up more than half of blood. The solid part of blood consists of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.

The term hematology includes any disease or disorder that can affect any component of the blood, preventing it from performing its required function properly.

Many blood diseases occur for genetic and hereditary reasons, and they can also occur as a result of other causes, such as contracting diseases such as kidney disease, as a result of using certain types of medications, or as a result of a deficiency in certain nutrients. Anemia and bleeding disorders such as hemophilia are among the most common types of blood diseases.
